The Laboratory of Dr. Grey - Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven

Once they both passed, white sheets were draped over them and they were rolled out into the hall. The men rolled them down the main hall and out the glass double doors where a truck was awaiting their arrival. They loaded the bodies and the doctor in charge climbing into the cab with the driver. The diver started the truck and he commented, “That was quicker than usual.”
The white coated man replied, “Yes, they were already weak. Don’t go to the fire pit; take us out of here were that tiny town used to be.”
The driver protested, explaining his reasons. “But Dr. Mendaf order them to be burned and I’ll get in trouble if he finds—”
“I don’t care what he said!” the man interrupted sharply. “Nothing good ever happens at that fire pit, and I won’t to risk my life for these scum bags. Take us out of town!”
The driver shrugged and a stubborn silence fell between them as they bumped along the dirt road. It began to drizzle as they were nearing the dump spot. They drove on a dirt road with chunks of asphalt still in place. Surrounding them were ruins of a demolished town. By this time there was hardly anything left except foundations, piles of rubble, and broken glass everywhere. That was all what was left of that town and many others like it. The thing that made this one different was no one lived there. Many of the destroyed cities had violent thugs residing in them, they would take advantage of any who crossed into their territory.
The truck screeched to a halt and the white coated man jumped out. He supervised as the guards hauled out the bodies and dumped them, still wrapped in the white sheets, just off the road. Rain began to come down even harder, turning the dirt roads into mud puddles. The men jumped back into the truck and they drove away, leaving the white forms in the distance.
Just after the truck disappeared, a cloaked figure emerged from the shadows of a pile of rubble which was formerly a house. He slipped over to the stained and soaked sheets, quickly uncovering them. He stared hard at their faces, seeming to delve deep inside of them, then passed a hand over their white and bruised faces.

Dr. Mendaf had just received word that the threats were disposed of and he picked up the phone. He dialed then waited of the other to pick up. “Dr. White? This is Dr. Grey again. The threats have been eliminated. We can continue with building up this land and government. ... No sir, there is nothing to worry about, I had their bodies burned and the detachment just returned. Their parents? I just told them that they died during the test, they know nothing of the program. ... I assure you, there is nothing to worry about. If any trouble comes up I will personally resolve it, if there is any. ... Thank you, sir. Yes, I’ll see you later, good bye.”
He put the telephone, a growing smile spreading across his face. Then his shoulders began to shake and he began to laugh, a deep bellowing laugh. Now there was nothing to stop them.

Roxanne’s eyelids fluttered open and she gasped in air, leaning forward. She inhaled sharply as pain shot through her torso and shoulders. Biting her lip she lowered herself back down closing her eyes, attempting to calm the pain. It was then that she noticed there was a heavy blanket wrapped around her and that she was laying on a soft bed of pine branches. She opened her eyes and glanced around. To her right there was a fire with a stooping man beside it and on the other side of the dancing flames was Damian. He looked as if he was sleeping peacefully. She could only see one side of the man’s face, but even from there she could see something strange about it. Like it almost... glowed. But of course that could have been the the light of the fire. Otherwise, He looked completely normal, in fact He could have passed for a beggar by the looks of His clothes. They were torn and stained, even for these times He could have easily passed for a vagabond. But there was just something about His face, it was gentle, wise and caring.
On the opposite side of the fire, Damian stirred then blinked with a confused expression on his face. “Where are we? Is this what after death is?”
When Damian mentioned death, Roxanne suddenly remembered everything she had just been through and she unconsciously began to rub the area where the needle had been.
The man looked at Damian, His soft gaze steady and piercing. “You are safe from the dangers of the world, though you are still alive yet.”
Damian processed His words then asked, “You mean they didn’t kill us?”
“No,” He responded, turning back to something by the fire, “you were quite dead. But now you are living and that is all that matters.”
Roxanne stared at Him skeptically, “Who are You? And why didn’t You let us die?”
Returning her gaze He pierced her through and she suddenly felt very uncomfortable. “You know who I am.” He broke eye contact and continued with something by the fire. “I brought you back because you have one last task to do. But come, we shall have plenty of time to talk of that, now you should eat and regain your strength.” He ladled out some broth into two bowls then helped them sit up. He handed them the bowls and then set to tending their wounds.
During this time they began a discussion that they built upon for many days there after.

Four months had passed in the company of this Man and He had taught them everything they needed for their next task, of which He hadn’t told them what it was exactly. Both Roxanne and Damian were completely healed and beginning to build up their original strength. They both thrived under His care and words, and they felt like completely different people. Though the time had come when they were ready for this last task.
He told them one day, just after they had returned from collecting roots and checking their traps: “This is that last meal I am to share with you. Tomorrow morning I shall not be here when you awake, and it is then that you should start on your final task. And I will tell you now what it is I am sending you on. I want you to go back to Vallent and proclaim what I have taught you about Me. Do it with boldness and know that there is nothing man can do to you that I have not permitted to happen. They will try to kill you for what you say is the Truth, and they are haters of the Truth. Though everything will be worth your toils because of the lives that you guide to life. Do not be afraid when they seize you and torment you, for I am with you. And there will come a day when they will put an end to your task, but know that others will carry on the legacy of what you proclaim. With these words, I leave you the choice; remain in hiding, or carry through your task.”
Silence fell among them as Roxanne and Damian pondered what they were going to do. They both knew what their end was going to be. All Roxanne could think of was that if they went back, the guards would capture them again. And for the first time in months she shivered as she felt the needle slip into her arm.
Damian looked up from studying the ground and gave his answer. “I will go, My Prince.”
Roxanne’s heart beat faster as they both turned to her for her response. Then she remembered Him saying, ‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you.’ She returned their gaze and replied, “I will go also, My Lord. Though I do not know the way.”
He smiled, an indescribable smile, and everything about Him seemed to brighten. “I am glad that you have chosen this path. Your course should be directly west and after three day’s walk you shall come to Vallent, where you shall find many new things. Remember, don’t hold anything of yours back if one of My children ask. Sleep now, you shall need your rest for the journey.”

The next morning, they found He had gone, just as He said. Together they packed up some provisions then set out, going west. The three days were uneventful, but very cold, with a bitter wind and sometimes rain. They talked a lot about the last four months they had spent with the Prince. At the end of the third day, they were beginning to look for a place to bed down for the night. The sky was a deep blue, as the sun disappeared and the first stars showed their winking lights. They decided that they should try over the hill that was just before them. The tall grass was wet with dew and it soaked their shoes as they clamored up. Before long, they crested the hill and the pair halted, their mouths parting slightly.
Stretching far and wide below them, were twinkling lights and they could pick out boundaries. Five sections all surrounded one in the very center, and they recognized a few trains running to and from the different sections. They also deciphered tall fences between an around the sections.
Damian broke the awed silence, “Things certainly changed since we were last here. I’m not sure I recognize any of that.”
“Yeah, I think we lived somewhere in that section,” she said pointing to one of the closer sections. “But I’m not sure.”
“Really? I thought we lived in the next one, just above it. But no matter now, what do you say we figure out the fence in the morning?”
Roxanne nodded in agreement, “That sounds fine to me. You know, I’m not even sure if I could recognize my old house even if it was right in front of me. I wonder if we’ll meet any of our family members. Do you think they’d know us?”
Damian shrugged as he unfolded a blanket and curled into it. “I’m not even sure if I could recognize them. Though I’d imagine that they think we’re dead, so I wouldn’t expect a warm welcome. Besides, remember what the Prince told us? Our own family members would turn against us, because of Him. Anyway, sleep well, Roxanne.”
“Good night,” Roxanne smile slightly with anticipation of what the future would hold. In the morning they would start out on the most important mission they had ever done. It would be their final test, to see if they could stand up for the Prince, even to the death.
